High impact exercises can increase the risk of serious injury for seniors, athletes in recovery, and people with chronic conditions. Fortunately, you can still maintain your physical fitness with low impact exercises that put less strain on your body’s joints. Even though the following exercises are low impact, you’ll still get a great cardiovascular workout that will help you build endurance, muscular strength, and overall health.

Cycling

Cycling, whether indoors or outdoors, is a great way to get your heart rate going and burn calories without putting too much strain on your joints. Cycling outdoors connects you with the world around you while cycling indoors gives you a great workout without having to leave the comfort of your home.

Walking

Taking a stroll around the neighborhood is definitely a low impact way to keep your body moving with less stress. Don’t be afraid to increase the intensity of your walk by picking up the pace. However, walking up or down hills or carrying a weight with you could increase stress on your joints. So try to stay on flat surfaces if you can.

Elliptical Machine

An elliptical is not only low-impact; it gives your whole body a workout, allowing you to tone not only your legs but your arms and back as well.

Swimming

Doing laps in the pool helps tone the muscles in your shoulder while also increasing lung function. While swimming is a low impact activity, it’s relatively high intensity,
